Who is Julian?
Julian of Norwich was a 14th-century English mystic and theologian who lived as an anchoress in the city of Norwich. From her small cell attached to a church, she became a sought-after spiritual guide, offering wisdom to people from all walks of life. Her book, “Revelations of Divine Love,” is the earliest known work in English written by a woman, and it records a series of vivid visions and theological reflections centred on God’s love and compassion.

What makes Julian so compelling today is not just her mysticism, but her grounded hope. Living amid profound suffering and uncertainty, she dared to insist that love, not fear, has the final word. For modern readers navigating their own forms of stress and instability, Julian’s confidence in divine love offers a surprisingly resilient and life-giving perspective.
When you visit us, you’ll notice we display blessed hazelnuts in the foyer. That’s because Julian famously described a small hazelnut as a sign of everything that exists, held and sustained by God’s love — a simple, tangible reminder that even the smallest things matter and are cherished. Take one, and remember that you’re beloved by God!
In August 2025 Reverend Karen led a “virtual pilgrimage” to the Julian Shrine in Norwich, UK. Here’s a link to that YouTube video.
